Simpson Patterns Ltd are looking for an apprentice CNC machinist to complete a Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship. The candidate will be trained to program and operate a variety of 5 axis machines to produce composite tooling and patterns from soft materials such as modelboard, plastics and different woods.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To be a trainee 5 Axis CNC Machinist, with internal training provided. To become competent in;
    • working knowledge of Fanuc control systems for programming purposes
    • working in a relatively high tolerance environment to automotive / Aerospace standards
    • Offline programming such as Autodesk Powermill
    • Operating CMS or BIESSE 5 axis machines
  • To advocate the organisation in a positive and professional manner at all times
  • To undertake any other duties as may be required within the scope of the post and participate as and when necessary, in organisational wide initiatives and projects

Role & responsibilities

  • To operate CNC machines
  • Prove out programmes at the machine
  • To set CNC machines for production runs in both manned and unmanned periods
  • Working in a manner which is safe for everyone in the machine shop
  • Assist planning to maximise utilisation of machines and manpower
  • To work on own initiative and understand the manufacturing process
  • Keep a clean and manageable working area
  • To work to tight tolerances and check own work
  • To work, following training, to customer drawings and specifications
  • To work with minimum supervision
  • Report any tooling requirements (including improvements) to the Technical Manager
  • Collaborating with line management and engineering support in any initiative to continuously improve the performance of the machine shop
  • Performing routine machine maintenance checks and completing check sheet records
  • Perform elements of self-inspection, filling out inspection records as required

Skills required:

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical documents and drawings
  • Understanding of Customer Product Quality expectations
  • Must want to aspire to achieve high standards of work and professionalism at all times
  • Ability to remain calm whilst working under pressure

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
