Eldon Tool and Engineering are looking for a CNC machinist apprentice to complete a level 3 machining technician apprenticeship. The candidate will work towards operating CNC machines in an efficient manner to help achieve the financial targets of the business within the constraints of ethical trading & good engineering practice.

Role & responsibilities

  • Under supervision, produce a high quality product and learn basic engineering skills:
    • Set up, adjust, edit and operate CNC machines (including turning and milling machines) ensuring quality workmanship at all times
    • Working under supervision to operate Sliding Head machines
    • Working on own initiative to perform complex and precision machining operations and machine parts to specifications
    • Using measuring equipment to calculate dimensions and tolerances and test completed products
    • Review and understand basic engineering drawings, programmes and design information and understand operations needed to fabricate products
    • Ensure that the correct tooling and materials are used for the task
  • To maintain and improve productivity:
    • Work in line with company procedures and machine capability to ensure production deadlines are met
    • Work to production quality standards and support continuous improvement activities
    • Check and inspect materials prior to machining to ensure they conform to quality standards, identifying and reporting on any faults to a Team leader
    • Inspect components produced, making adjustments where required in order to meet quality requirements. Report any issues affecting the component quality, quantity and production deadline to a team leader
  • Maintain set-up sheets as required and in line with company procedure
    • Complete machining documentation for all stages of the work required including standard operating procedures
  • Work in all departments throughout the business as directed and when instructed, work in all areas of the production department and as necessary in other areas of the business to gain a sound understanding of how the company functions and operates ensuring at all times instructions are adhered to
  • Ensure work area is kept clean and tidy at all times by keeping machine and all associated tools and equipment in a clean and tidy manner
  • Work within a safe environment:
    • By ensuring all company procedures and Health & Safety legislation are followed at all times
    • Understand and operate safe systems of working including being able to risk assess jobs
    • Conduct safety checks of machines, associated equipment and surrounding area
    • Wearing the appropriate protective clothing and equipment at all times

Skills required:

  • A team player
  • Organised, focused and able to adopt a high level of attention to detail within your work
  • Previous machining experience an advantage but not essential

Personal qualities the candidate must have:

  • Have an interest in engineering, ideally with a basic knowledge of cars
  • To be motivated with a “can do” attitude

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
