Qualter Hall & Co are looking for a machinist apprentice to complete a level 3 machinist technician apprenticeship. They are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to develop a range of machining skills in order to become part of the Production Team. When competent, the candidate will work to accurately machine a range of standard and bespoke fabricated steel products to appropriate quality standards in line with customer requirements and or company standards in the most effective manner.

Role & responsibilities:

This role will incorporate an engineering apprenticeship with the aim of developing the technical skills necessary to produce machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards.

During your apprenticeship you will learn and be able to complete the following:

  • Able to read engineering drawings
  • Work on own initiative
  • Ability to operate a variety of large CNC machines
  • Use measuring equipment

During your apprenticeship you will be expected to gain an understanding of the following:

  • General engineering/manufacturing methods, techniques
  • Understanding and interpreting relevant engineering/manufacturing data and documentation in order to complete their job role
  • Understanding the different roles and functions in the organisation and how they interact
  • Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation)
  • Working safely at all times, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements
  • Planning and where applicable obtaining all the resources required to undertake the work activity
  • Focus on quality and problem solving. Follow instructions and guidance, demonstrates attention to detail, follow a logical approach to problem solving and seek opportunities to improve quality, speed and efficiency.
  • Continuous personal development. Reflect on skills, knowledge and behaviours and seeks opportunities to develop, adapt to different situations, environments or technologies and have a positive attitude to feedback and advice.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
