Royston Lead are looking for a Maintenance engineer apprentice to complete a Level 3 machining technician apprenticeship. Royston Lead require a multi-skilled apprentice to grow with the company as it moves forward with the times and advancement in technologies. This is a stable business with extensive investment being a big part of the company’s strategy.

Role & responsibilities:

This will be an opportunity to gain experience maintaining rolling mills, burners, metal extrusion and forming, and includes:

  • Planned maintenance and reactive maintenance along with continuous improvement work
  • Mechanical repairs, to include welding and fabricating
  • Electrical testing and repairs
  • Use of electrical drawings to interpret faults

The role is in a foundry environment and will need the candidate to be prepared to get their hands dirty.  All PPE is to be strictly adhered to.

Lead is a product that can be harmful.  Whilst working at Royston Lead, there are several precautionary measures that engineering staff including apprentices are required to follow to protect their health and safety: 

  • Removing work overalls before break times and before eating and drinking
  • Washing hands regularly and before eating and drinking
  • Wearing a face mask when entering and working in the main manufacturing area.
  • Shower at the end of every working day before leaving the site
  • 3-monthly blood test

Skills required:

  • Attention to detail, excellent communication skills and working safely
  • Candidate needs to be physically fit and have a keen eye for precision work
  • Must work well with others and to be able to take instruction to the letter

Personal qualities the candidate must have:

  • Keen, enthusiastic and be willing to learn
  • To be patient and understanding of standards required to work safely
  • Technically minded with good hand skills
  • Team working is essential along with the confidence to work alone when required

Employer description:

Royston Lead are a specialist metals supplier to diverse industries, to include medical, Nuclear, Mining and Construction. The company is part of a multi-national group and has been operating out of its current site for over 100 years.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
