Job description:

P & B Metal Components are looking for a toolmaker apprentice to complete a level 3 machining technician apprenticeship. As an apprentice, the candidate will be provided with guidance and training to develop the skills necessary for a successful career as a toolmaker.

Role & responsibilities:

Daily Tasks:

  • Work towards the repair and service of tools for production
  • Work closely with all nominated senior toolmakers who will provide relevant training
  • Work towards preventative maintenance on tooling, all aspects of machining and bench fitting i.e. grinding, turning, milling, spark erosion etc.
  • Understand and thereafter utilise precision/optical measuring equipment
  • Attend to power press to identify or overcome problem whilst tooling is in a running condition
  • Gain knowledge and work towards an ability to assess and report the life of the press tool and order new parts that need replacing
  • Gain an understanding and an ability to replace pilots, probe pins, springs, designing and making specialist fixtures to fit to tools
  • Observe Health & Safety regulations at all times
  • With support, work towards the repairing of fixtures, jigs and electrodes for Line Shop and Tape Shop when required urgently
  • Understand the requirements for spares/replacements/backups (as and where appropriate) and requirements for new parts (as and when appropriate)
  • Report H&S concerns

Weekly Tasks:

  • Become involved with any quality concerns and work towards (with support) applying permanent corrective actions
  • With support from the team understand the process of testing tooling prior to release and provide evidence to the Production team
  • With initial assistance maintain all machines within the Tool rooms to a safe standard of use and report on all potential safety hazards to Supervisors or Managers
  • To clean down machinery and equipment after use so as to maintain a clean and safe area
  • Inform department supervisors of any apprenticeship training provider updates, and actively contribute learning and development recommendations and improvements

Monthly Tasks:

  • To understand and develop knowledge in other areas such as Design, Wire Erosion and CNC machining

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
