Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering Limited are looking for an Apprentice Foundry Welder to complete a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship and join their team. The successful candidate will support the foundry finishing department welding production activities.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Use welding processes to produce high-quality welds on castings, and occasionally on forgings and plates
  • Use at least one arc welding process, such as MMA, MAG, TIG, or SAW
  • Obtain qualifications in accordance with BS EN ISO 9606, ASME IX, or NAVSEA standards, for welding in various welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical-up), butt and fillet welds
  • Position and prepare welding equipment, assembling basic accessories, change gas bottles safely, ensuring proper gas flow, and setting up welding variables per the provided Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). Check for faults or hazards before operation
  • Prepare working area for welding. Maintain workstations and the welding area in good condition. Ensure welding and/or gas cables are safe, disposing of any faulty cables or filler materials appropriately. Perform general housekeeping duties aligned with the work environment
  • Handle filler materials (covered electrodes, wires, etc.) as per instructions
  • Operate thermal equipment (gas torches ceramic, induction heaters) to prepare
    component or application for welding
  • Use cranes, rulers, callipers, clamps, angle grinders or any other tool or equipment to prepare or protect components or assemblies for welding
  • Verify correct temperature ranges using temperature probes, crayons etc.
  • Check surface preparation and excavation work prior to welding to ensure compliance with job requirements
  • Report any issues to the supervisor(s)
  • Ensure all duties are carried out according to quality and health and safety procedures
  • Carry out training E.G. Work at Height, Confined space needed for this role
  • To work within the company safety framework

We offer a variety of apprenticeships in Maintenance, Technical, Production and Office Based roles.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
