Portakabin Limited are looking for a Structural Engineering Apprentice to complete a Level 6 Product Design & Development Engineer degree apprenticeship and join their team. 

Sitting within our dynamic Central Design & Engineering department, the Structural Engineering Apprentice plays a crucial part in supporting the Product Compliance team to ensure our innovative products meet and exceed structural codes and practices across various sectors and markets. The role will work closely with the Lead Structural Engineer, gaining hands-on experience in performing essential structural calculations, creating sophisticated models, and conducting rigorous testing. Role & responsibilities:

  • Utilise advanced software tools to create detailed structural models, ensuring they meet the required standards for validation and sign-off by the Lead Structural Engineer
  • Conduct precise structural calculations, justifying the integrity and safety of Portakabin products validated by the Lead Structural Engineer
  • Execute both internal and external structural testing as directed by the Lead Structural Engineer or Technical Compliance Manager
  • Analyse and interpret test data to compile comprehensive validation documentation, including structural reports and presentations, for internal or external approval
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge about current technological advancements and analyse opportunities for integrating new technologies within the business

Skills required:

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Computer literate / IT skills using full Microsoft Software Office Suite
  • Experience in working as part of a team
  • Experience in authoring technical documentation (desirable)
  • Experience in 3D modelling software (desirable)

Personal qualities the candidate must have:

  • Practical thinker with an understanding of construction, manufacturing and engineering
  • A proactive, team-oriented attitude with the ability to work independently when required
  • Willingness to travel and adapt to new environments, with a full UK driving licence or a plan to obtain one being desirable

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based in Catcliffe, Sheffield, for a phased-block delivery over a 38-week period.  One Friday per month you will return to your workplace.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study with hybrid learning.  The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Unless exemptions apply, year 1 apprentices are required to live full time in Sheffield for 24 weeks in university accommodation so that they can attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield. 

Future programme years apprentices are required to continue attending the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, for example, 1 day per month which will require travel and overnight hotel accommodation.

You will work Monday to Friday. Flexible approach to working hours (Core hours are 10.00am- 2:30pm).

Qualification Requirements:

Degree Apprenticeship entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

You will need one of the following:

  • A minimum of two A-Levels at grade B or above, including a mathematical-based subject and a science, technology, engineering or an additional mathematics-related subject
  • An Engineering BTEC Level 3 with at least 120 credits at Distinction Merit (DM) level or above
  • EAL Diploma in an engineering-based subject at Distinction level
  • Equivalent qualifications, such as Technical Levels at DM or above.

Candidates with an HND or Foundation Degree or who have completed the second year of a degree in a relevant subject can be assessed for direct entry onto the 2nd or 3rd year of the programme (BEng top-up), but 1st year entry or an alternative pathway may still be recommended.

Candidates who have not studied in the UK can submit transcripts for qualifications equivalent to level 3 which the admissions panel will review and may be taken in lieu of the specified qualifications.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete the AMRC Training Centre and employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
