AMRC Training Centre takes the lead on encouraging young people to ‘rise to the top during National Apprenticeship Week

This year the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) Training Centre is celebrating National Apprenticeship Weeks call to help young people ‘rise to the top by encouraging them to find out how an apprenticeship could help them succeed in an exciting career in engineering.

The Training Centre is opening its doors between 14-18 March 2016, with a jam-packed week of events and open days. Prospective apprentices and schools interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are invited to tour the Training Centres state of the art teaching facilities, meet current apprentices and take part in engineering challenges.

One of the open days will be tailored to those interested in the routes into higher education an apprenticeship can offer. Completing a manufacturing Foundation Degree at the AMRC Training Centre, gives young people the opportunity to gain certified University of Sheffield degree-level qualifications without accumulating student debt.

Kerry Featherstone, head of operations for the AMRC Training Centre said qualified apprentices are in high demand from the global advanced manufacturing sector:

“Nearly all, 90 per cent of apprentices remain employed after completion of their apprenticeship and a quarter will go on to be promoted within their first year.

“As well as increasing their employability, an apprenticeship increases earning power. Individuals with an advanced or higher apprenticeship will also earn more over their lifetime than those who have similar level qualifications.”

The weeks events will also include a ‘Back to the floor day held for teachers and careers advisors to experience life as an apprentice. Giving an insight for those involved in the teaching of STEM-related subjects into an apprenticeship, possible career pathways and entry requirements.

At the end of the week, local businesses in the manufacturing sector considering hiring an apprentice are invited to an Employers Breakfast. This will be the opportunity to network with businesses that are already employing apprentices to find out what benefits they can bring such as developing the skills base of a workforce and addressing the engineering skills gap.
