Before you start
There are lots of things that you can do to get a head start on apprenticeship life before you arrive.
As you are about to embark on the next step of your engineering career, we would like to give you as much information as possible so you can make the most out of your time with us.

What to bring with you
There are a few items that you will need for your apprenticeship and you will be expected to bring:
- Something to take notes in sessions.
- A4 lined paper
- Graph paper
- Pens
- Pencils
- Eraser
- 300mm ruler
- Protractor
- Scientific calculator
What facilities are available?

Car Parking
Parking spaces at the AMRC Training Centre are limited, so please be aware that on-site parking is on a first come first served basis.
Public Transport
Please plan your route to ensure you arrive ahead of your scheduled start time. Further information on public transport routes to the centre can be found on the Travel South Yorkshire website.
As we are part of the University of Sheffield, students can apply to live in University of Sheffield accommodation for part or all of the duration of their course.
This may be particularly useful during the 'block release' practical skills training period at the start of your apprenticeship if your place of work is not local or you don't have access to your own transport.

Our on-site café is open 9am - 1pm and serves breakfast, hot meals, snacks and hot and cold drinks.
We have microwave facilities on-site for apprentices to bring their own food.
Consumption of food in the classrooms is not permitted.
Apprentice support
At the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre we have an experienced team of teaching and learning mentors, committed to working with apprentices both in and out of the classroom and workshop to identify and meet individuals' needs and goals.
If you would like, we can liaise directly with your company, family and your teaching team to ensure you thrive during your apprenticeship with us.
If you have additional support needs, are a care leaver or have caring responsibilities that affect your ability to study you are entitled to additional support.
It is important that you contact recruitment@amrctraining.co.uk as soon as possible so we can arrange support for you.

We recommend that our Advanced apprenticeship (Level 3) students use these resources to help get a head start on their apprenticeship.
Maths
Refresh your knowledge on the fundamentals of maths such as conversions cm to mm, measuring with precision, multiplication tables, algebra, trigonometry and angles, shapes, interpreting and representing using mathematical diagrams, communicating with mathematics and problem solving. The following websites will help:
- Corbettmaths - worksheets with answers, instructional videos and five a day worksheets
- Maths Genie - instructional videos and past paper questions
- Hegartymaths - how to videos and practice questions
- Khan Academy - resources here will help you with anything that you may feel ‘rusty’ on.
English
Focus on making sure that your punctuation and spelling is correct and that you can write down what you want to express clearly and succinctly. The following websites will help:
- BBC Skillswise - helps you to improve specific English skills
- Functional Skills - focuses on the development of English skills that are needed in the workplace.
