Finalists for the ‘Hallam FM’ First Year Apprentice of the Year Award

Amy Brown – RE Field Services LTD
I am an apprentice field technician and within this role I work all over the country overhauling and performing maintenance on generators and motors. In my first year I visited sites up and down the country from Veolia Portsmouth to Dundee Energy Recycling LTD.
The work I did in the hand fitting, electrical and mechanical units provided me with skills that were vital to my work such as: connecting a motor to a control panel, creating a datum edge and working on gearboxes. The assessors, trainers and other apprentices are always welcoming and quick to help which made the transition between school and work easier.
Once I am qualified, I would like to complete an Offshore Training Course that will allow me to use and develop my skills in a range of fields. After I complete my Level 3 Mechatronics course I am going to progress onto a HNC and a degree.

Kirbi Leigh Taylor – NIKKEN
As an apprentice service engineer, my daily duties are to carry out conversions on rotary tables. This involves changing and stamping a new name plate, doing paperwork and running a variety of tests to ensure the table runs to original manufacturer specifications. I also perform general servicing of tables.
One of my highlights has been the opportunity to escort VIPs around the training centre and show them how amazing it is and the endless amount of possibilities it has to offer. Others include winning the Spotlight Award and all the different learning opportunities, both in and out of the workshop, and key information which I now use in company.
I would like to further the academic side of my apprenticeship to widen my knowledge so that I can help NIKKEN to grow and continue to be successful in the future. I would like to hold a managerial position, whether at my site or several sites around the world, following in the footsteps of our CEO Tony Bowkett.

Lewis Whitbread – Sterling Machining
A typical day as an apprentice machinist sees me operating, setting and programming various CNC lathe machines both for myself and other team members.
The high points of being at the AMRC Training Centre have been meeting, and learning from, the experienced trainers; learning to competently operate and set machines that I otherwise would not have had access to; and passing the second-year maths exam.
My career aspirations are to be a highly-valued member of the team at Sterling Machining. I hope to branch into a mentoring role and take on responsibility for apprentice management as well as fulfilling my duties as a machinist.
