Castings Technology International Limited are looking for an Aerospace Welding Apprentice Engineer to complete a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship.

This is a 4-year apprenticeship in the field of welding at a world class castings facility. The apprenticeship will involve welding of both ferrous and non-ferrous materials for the manufacture of Aerospace and defence components, working to ASME IX welding qualification and standard for steel materials as well as NADCAP for aerospace titanium and the chosen candidate will gain customer approval for the welding of titanium and super alloy materials, working to precise procedures.

Role & responsibilities:

On completion of apprenticeship the successful applicant will be competent in and responsible for the below disciplines:
  • Proficient in carrying out: MIG welding, TIG welding, Stick welding, MAG welding
  • Drafting and part conceptualisation
  • Proficient in CAD (SolidWorks)
  • Fundamental grasp of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Consumable stock control i.e. weld wire, electrode, etc.
  • Daily maintenance checks for chambers and welding sets
  • Part cleanliness checks prior to accepting to the welding activity
  • Proficient in TIG welding of titanium in a vacuum welding chamber
  • Proficient in TIG welding of titanium outside of vacuum welding chamber
  • Checks for chamber environment (oxygen PPM) pre weld
  • Assessment of excavation site i.e. the condition of the prep for welding, this may involve manual dressing to suit
  • Part cleaning through the Aqueous Degreasing Facility
  • Upkeep of weld wire usage logs
  • Welding components in accordance to the relevant WPS documentation
  • Conduct relevant weld qualification tests as required
  • Identify and follow correct metal work instructions, specifications, and drawings
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques
  • Produce and assemble metal products to required specification and quality requirements
  • Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications and drawings
  • Produce work from structural materials
  • Weld mapping (when required)
  • Understanding of metallurgy
  • Knowledge of the foundry process and, in particular, casting manufacture and weld repair of casting defect
  • Become proficient in fabrication welding and design
  • Conduct pre-fabrication cutting and sizing of required metallic materials
  • In-depth understanding of casting upgrade
  • Participation in casting upgrade
  • Understanding of mould manufacture, both ceramic and sand
  • Understanding of the NDT (non-destructive testing) department
  • Proficient in the basic principles of melting and casting of both steel and titanium
  • Spend time within, and ascertain a good understanding of, all activities within CTI's UKAS-accredited laboratory
  • Achieve a proficient understanding of engineering design and manufacture
  • Spend time in all manufacturing areas of the business
  • Have a high-regard for Health & Safety
  • Maintain a good standard of housekeeping
  • Visual inspection of welds by other welders (post training)
  • Responsibilities are not limited to the above

Employer description:

Castings Technology currently operates from a purpose-built facility in the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire, UK.  The 10,000 m²  facility houses the latest pattern-making, moulding, vacuum and air melt casting facilities together with support services.

The company has an exciting future ahead; having outgrown the current facility, plans are in place to move to a larger, 200,000 sq ft facility in Sheffield.  The new premises will be ready to move into in late 2026 once new, state-of-the-art equipment has been installed.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
