Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering Limited are looking for an Apprentice Machinist (Machine Shop) to complete a Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship and join their team.
The purpose of this role is to develop as a safe, reliable and highly-skilled machinist in both manual and CNC; capable of producing complex, precision-engineered components from large-scale forgings and castings in a heavy engineering environment. In the role the apprentice will support the effective operation of plant, equipment and facilities while learning to use advanced machining technology, follow best-practice processes, and contribute to high-quality, compliant manufacturing through a combination of on-the-job training and college-based study.
Role & responsibilities:
The apprentice will learn to set, run and operate both manual and CNC machines while producing precision-engineered components from large-scale forgings and castings. The apprentice will carry out their own inspections to ensure parts meet quality standards and supporting the safe loading and unloading of components. The apprentice will develop strong Health & Safety habits, use modern machining technology as part of the training and work closely with experienced machinists to build their skills and confidence. As the apprentice progresses, they will take on additional duties suited to their growing capability.
- Attend and actively participate in all academic learning, training sessions, and assessments as part of the apprenticeship programme
- Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality for both workplace duties and academic commitments
- Complete the Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours (KSB) requirements in-line with apprenticeship standards
- Build and maintain a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate learning, skills development, and competency throughout the apprenticeship
- Show a strong commitment to studies, including completing assignments, coursework, and independent learning tasks on time
- Demonstrate motivation to learn new skills and a willingness to develop professionally and personally
- Show commitment to self-improvement and continuous development
- Carry out workplace duties responsibly, demonstrating commitment to the role and the organisation
- Follow all company policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.

The company specialises in producing large, high-quality steel components that are essential for critical industries such as Defence and Energy. We offer a variety of apprenticeships in Maintenance, Technical, Production and Office Based roles.
Things to consider:
During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements
You will need both of the following:
- GCSE English language C or 4 or above
- GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.
Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
