Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering Limited are looking for an Apprentice Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician to complete a Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship and join their team.

The purpose of this role is to train and develop to be capable of installing, maintaining and improving mechanical and electrical systems across the site, specialising in one discipline while supporting the other. In this role the apprentice will ensure that all equipment and machinery—both modern and ageing—remain safe, reliable and fully operational through effective reactive and preventative maintenance. By supporting breakdown response, planned maintenance and continuous improvement activities, the apprentice helps maintain plant performance, uphold safety standards and contribute to the smooth running of a modern steel production facility.

Role & responsibilities:

The apprentice will support the installation, maintenance and improvement of mechanical and electrical systems across the site, carrying out both reactive repairs and planned preventative maintenance on a wide range of equipment. The role involves working on both modern and older plant within a busy steel production environment, responding to breakdowns and helping put corrective actions in place. You’ll assist with planned, preventative and predictive maintenance, take part in condition checks, refurbishment work and continuous improvement activities, and maintain high housekeeping standards throughout all work areas.
You’ll work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor to plan and organise maintenance tasks, while reading and interpreting technical data, drawings and documentation. A key part of the role is identifying opportunities to improve processes and working practices. You’ll also support equipment installation, testing, commissioning and confirmation testing, all while ensuring safe working at all times and following all Health & Safety regulations.

  • Attend and actively participate in all academic learning, training sessions, and assessments as part of the apprenticeship programme
  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality for both workplace duties and academic commitments
  • Complete the Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours (KSB) requirements in-line with apprenticeship standards
  • Build and maintain a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate learning, skills development, and competency throughout the apprenticeship
  • Show a strong commitment to studies, including completing assignments, coursework, and independent learning tasks on time
  • Demonstrate motivation to learn new skills and a willingness to develop professionally and personally
  • Show commitment to self-improvement and continuous development
  • Carry out workplace duties responsibly, demonstrating commitment to the role and the organisation
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.

We offer a variety of apprenticeships in Maintenance, Technical, Production and Office Based roles.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
