Tomah Engineers Limited are looking for a Machining Apprentice to complete a level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship.

The candidate will receive initial formal training from the AMRC Training Centre, with frequent periods in the Tomah Engineers workshop. Once this initial training phase is complete, the candidate will follow a training plan set out by the Production Manager which best prepares the apprentice to achieve the standards we require. The candidate will be appointed a work-based mentor to provide technical and welfare support.

During the first training phase the apprentice will spend time learning and using the lathes, horizontal borers, slotters and X,Y,Z milling machines. After this period, the candidate will focus on one area of our operations to complete their technical training program. It is equally important that the apprentice attends the AMRC Training Centre on a day-release basis, to pursue academic qualifications, with full support from the business.

Where necessary, the company will provide safety training to gain the appropriate certifications.

Role & responsibilities

Day to day Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the work-based training plan
  • Ensuring that the training program is fully updated with work-based experiences and tasks
  • Support the Production Manager and team with day-to-day operations and customer orders
  • Ensure that all PPE is worn
  • Ensure that all training tasks are carried out in a safe manner
  • Undertake additional tasks which the Production Manager requires
  • Working to ensure the company’s focus on quality

Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Review of the works-based training program and plan the month ahead
  • Provide progress updates of the academic course

Skills required:

  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Fully IT competent (preferrable but not essential)
  • An awareness of health and safety policy

Personal qualities the candidate must have:

  • Ideally a candidate who is 18-22 years’ old with some previous working experience
  • A strong interest in engineering and working with their hands
  • Present good manners and responsible behaviour at all times
  • Interest in science, engineering, or construction materials
  • Punctual and honest
  • Full driving licence (preferred but not essential)

Tomah Engineers is a well-established machining workshop, which has a good reputation within the domestic engineering market, the production team routinely deal with a diverse range of customer orders, which spans many industries.
Under its new ownership, there is an exciting development and growth strategy in place within which, this role will form part of the long-term strategy. The role will best suit an ambitious individual who enjoys working in a practical ‘hands on’ role as part of a busy team.
The current manufacturing operations produce high-quality products ranging from 10mm up to 1,000mm diameters, for the medium / heavy engineering sectors, working on one off and small batch quantity customer orders. The current workshop operations use conventional machinery, however there is the possibility of the introduction of NC machines in the future.
Within the production team there are seven skilled machine operators working on lathes, horizontal borers, XYZ millers and slotting machines as well as basic assembly operations.
The existing plant is in good condition with a recent investment in a new 6.5m long bed lathe and further plant investments are planned to achieve the business strategy.
All health and safety issues are under control and frequently inspected.

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
