AMRC Training Centre apprentice comes runner up in renowned industry prize

Bradley McDonald, apprentice metallurgist and forge estimator at Sheffield Forgemasters has achieved second place in the IOM3 Technician of the Year award for his NVQ level 3 project ‘Production of a Plate Mill Roll.

The awards are open to all those currently studying materials, minerals technology or related subjects and those who have completed such courses within the last two years.

Bradley said: “I am really proud to come second in the prestigious IOM3 award. Its confirmed to me that metallurgy is the right career for me.  I intend to continue building on my success and move on to a foundation degree in manufacturing technology materials at the AMRC Training Centre.”

Bradley was encouraged to apply for this award by his apprentice supervisor at Sheffield Forgemasters, Rick Franckeiss. Following his application, Bradley was shortlisted for the award and was invited to London for an interview where he was asked a series of questions on his project.

Rick Franckeiss said: “Bradley has learnt a great deal in his first year as an apprentice and is now playing a key role as forge estimator in his department.  I had the privilege of joining him at the IOM3 dinner where he received his award; he is a credit to the company”

AMRC Training Centre Director of Training, Alison Bettac, said: “Bradley has been a real inspiration to the metallurgy apprentice cohort since starting in 2013.  We are all very proud that his achievements have been recognised through this prestigious award scheme. Well done Bradley!”
