CISDI UK Limited are looking for an Apprentice Draftsperson to complete a Level 6 Product Design & Development degree apprenticeship and join their team.

The candidate will support the design and delivery of mechanical equipment used in large-scale industrial and steel production environments.

Working within an experienced engineering team, the candidate will produce high-quality technical drawings and 3D models that are used for the manufacture, installation, and operation of plant and equipment. The role provides direct exposure to real engineering projects, from concept through to implementation.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Produce and maintain 2D and 3D mechanical drawings using CAD software
  • Develop detailed fabrication and assembly drawings for industrial equipment
  • Translate engineering concepts and calculations into clear, buildable designs
  • Update drawings in line with design changes and project requirements
  • Support engineers in preparing layout drawings for plant and equipment
  • Ensure all drawings comply with relevant standards and company procedures
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and fabrication teams to ensure design accuracy
  • Assist in document control, ensuring drawings and revisions are properly managed
  • Participate in site visits to understand how equipment is installed and operated in a live industrial environment
Technical Exposure

You will gain experience in the design of equipment typically used within the steel and heavy industrial sectors, such as:

  • Material Handling Systems
  • Furnace and high-temperature equipment
  • Rolling mill components and auxiliary systems
  • Structural steelwork and plant layouts

Development

The role combines practical experience with academic study as part of a degree apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. Over time, you will develop:
  • Proficiency in industry-standard CAD tools
  • A strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and practices
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles in demanding industrial environments
  • The ability to contribute effectively to complex, multi-disciplinary projects

Working Environment

  • Office-based design work, with regular interaction across engineering disciplines
  • Exposure to international projects and industrial clients
  • Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities and operational plant sites

Skills required:

  • Good H&S and environmental awareness
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good organisational and time-management skills

  • Able to work in a team or independently
  • Strong work ethic, able to demonstrate as well as set the high standards

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Degree apprenticeship entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

You will need one of the following:

  • A minimum of two A-Levels at grade B or above, including a mathematical-based subject and a science, technology, engineering or an additional mathematics-related subject
  • An Engineering BTEC Level 3 with at least 120 credits at Distinction Merit (DM) level or above
  • EAL Diploma in an engineering-based subject at Distinction level
  • Equivalent qualifications, such as Technical Levels at DM or above.

Candidates with an HND or Foundation Degree or who have completed the second year of a degree in a relevant subject can be assessed for direct entry onto the 2nd or 3rd year of the programme (BEng top-up), but 1st year entry or an alternative pathway may still be recommended.

Candidates who have not studied in the UK can submit transcripts for qualifications equivalent to level 3 which the admissions panel will review and may be taken in lieu of the specified qualifications.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete the AMRC Training Centre and employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
