Parents and carers guide
What is an engineering apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a real job with a structured training programme. It allows your child to earn a wage while developing the specific knowledge, skills and behaviours required for a modern manufacturing career.
All our apprentices are employed on a full-time basis, working at least 30 hours per week. Their time is split between their employer’s premises and our state-of-the-art training centre in Catcliffe.
Training delivery models
Depending on the specific job role, apprentices may follow one of delivery models:
- Long block: up to 38 weeks, Monday to Friday in the training centre learning practical skills then day release.
- Short block: a rotation of two to five weeks with the employer followed by three to five weeks in the training centre, then day release
- Employer based: our trainers/workplace coaches work with the apprentice on employer premises. This is usually via remote and or hybrid teaching, learning and assessment delivery plans.
Apprenticeship levels and qualifications
We offer a clear progression route, from entry-level roles to degree-standard qualifications.
- Advanced (level 3): equivalent to A-levels.
- Higher (level 4): equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree.
- Degree (level 6): results in a full bachelor of engineering (BEng) degree.
Apprentices undertake practical work in their chosen field and then study the theory. They may undertake exams during their apprenticeship and will work towards the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSB's) criteria which is set out in the national apprenticeship standard for each programme. Apprentices have taught sessions, course work, assignments, practical tests and exams. They will also have observations and assessments whilst carrying out daily tasks. The apprentice works with their workplace mentor/manager and AMRC TC staff to plan how they will meet the apprenticeship requirements.
Every programme concludes with an end point assessment (EPA). This is an independent evaluation to ensure the apprentice has met the national standards for their industry.
How to apply: our recruitment process
Securing a place at the AMRC Training Centre is a multi-stage process. Unlike a traditional college, your child must secure employment with one of our partner companies to begin their training.
- Initial assessment: we review the application and conduct an industrial-based assessment and interview.
- Vacancy matching: successful applicants gain access to our vacancy board and job fairs to meet prospective employers.
- Employer interview: shortlisted candidates are invited to interview with the company. This may include a tour or an open day.
- Confirmation: once a job offer is made and accepted, the apprentice’s place at the training centre is confirmed.
Please note: if an applicant does not gain employment before our intake dates (September or March), they will be unable to start the programme.
How you can support your child
The application process for engineering apprenticeships is highly competitive. Your guidance can make a significant difference:
- Research together: explore different engineering pathways to find the right fit for their interests.
- Identify skills and qualities: support students in recognising their personal strengths and identifying the transferable skills they can bring from school, hobbies, or part-time work into an engineering environment.
- Check entry requirements: our criteria are often higher than other providers. Check these early to ensure your child is on track for the required grades.
- Prepare for applications: help your child treat the application form like a professional CV. It is the primary tool employers use for shortlisting.
- Practice interviews: conduct mock interviews to build their confidence for both our assessments and employer meetings.
- Have a backup plan: because spots are limited and employer-led, we always recommend having a secondary option in place.
- Book an open event: we host several events throughout the year at the AMRC Training Centre, offering an excellent opportunity to tour our state-of-the-art workshops, meet our teaching and recruitment teams, and ask any questions you have about our engineering apprenticeships.
Expectations of our apprentices
We pride ourselves on producing industry-ready professionals. To succeed, we expect all apprentices to demonstrate:
- Professionalism: including impeccable punctuality and attendance.
- Commitment: a proactive approach to both classroom and workplace learning.
- Safety awareness: strict compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Time management: the ability to balance the demands of a full-time job with academic assignments.
