Sterling Machining Limited are looking for an Apprentice Machinist to complete a Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship.

Machinists in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector perform highly skilled, complex, and precision machining tasks. They manufacture components from specialist materials using both conventional and CNC machine tools, including center lathes, vertical machining centers, and multiaxis CNC equipment. The role requires strong technical capability, accuracy, and the ability to work with minimal supervision to ensure components meet exacting engineering standards.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Interpret and apply engineering data and documentation, including engineering drawings, technical specifications, and computer-generated programmes
  • Set up, operate, and adjust/edit machine tool settings according to equipment requirements (conventional and/or CNC)
  • Produce, prove out, and/or edit CNC programmes to ensure efficient and accurate machining processes
  • Use mathematical techniques, algebraic expressions, formulae, and practical calculations to support machining operations (e.g., speeds and feeds, angles, tapers, material removal rates)
  • Measure, inspect, and verify machined components during and after production; make corrective adjustments to equipment and programmes to ensure adherence to specifications
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while taking full responsibility for the quality and accuracy of completed work
  • Demonstrate understanding of the structure, properties, and characteristics of materials commonly used in the machining of components
  • Understand and apply correct procedures for work-holding devices, cutting tools, and machine/tooling setup
  • Proactively identify solutions to problems and contribute to continuous improvement within the business

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
