McLaren Automotive Limited are looking for a Composites Apprentice to complete a Level 3 Composites Technician apprenticeship. We are looking for highly-motivated individuals to join our expanding production team to produce components for the range of McLaren high-performance sports cars. As a composite apprentice, you will be responsible for assisting in the design, tooling, moulding, lay-up, curing and production of composite products for McLarens Performance Road cars. You will work under the supervision of experienced technicians and engineers, learning the necessary skills and knowledge to become a proficient composite technician.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Understand and follow detailed work instructions / SOP’s
  • Ensure that all station operations are complete to the required quality standard
  • Ensure that all operations are complete in the required timescale (Takt time)
  • Work as part of a team on the definition and solution of problems that may be affecting the quality, cost, or productivity
  • Attend the workplace on a regular and timely basis, informing the Team Leader of any lateness or unplanned absence in a timely manner
  • Ensure the work area is clean, tidy, and orderly always in line with McLaren expectations
  • Maintain a safe working environment for yourself and team members
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities as requested
  • Understand and adhere to the McLaren Values and help grow the company
  • Assisting with the design and manufacture of composite materials, including layup, cutting, bonding, and curing
  • Operating and maintaining equipment used in composite production, such as cutting tools, vacuum pumps, and autoclaves
  • Assisting in the preparation of moulds and tooling for composite parts
  • Learning and adhering to safety procedures and regulations
  • Keeping track of inventory and ordering supplies as necessary
  • Collaborating with other team members to meet project deadlines and quality standards
  • Conducting tests and inspections to ensure the quality of finished products
  • Maintaining accurate records of production activities and materials used

  • Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects, and work in a variety of conditions
  • Basic maths and computer skills
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills

McLaren Application

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study.  You will return to your workplace one Friday per month.  After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
